SLEEPWELL® ANTI-SNORING DEVICE
Snoring is a very common problem that can affect sleep quality for both the person snoring and their partner. Studies suggest that over 40% of adults snore, with research reporting that approximately 38% of men and 30% of women experience regular snoring.¹
While occasional snoring may be harmless, frequent or loud snoring can disrupt sleep and sometimes indicate an underlying sleep condition.
What causes snoring?
Snoring occurs when the airway partially narrows during sleep. As air flows through the throat, the surrounding soft tissues vibrate and produce the sound recognised as snoring.²
Several factors can increase the likelihood of snoring, including:
The position of the jaw and tongue during sleep
Being overweight
Alcohol consumption before bed
Nasal congestion or blocked airways
Sleeping on your back
For some people, persistent snoring may also be linked to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
Snoring and sleep apnoea
Obstructive sleep apnoea is a condition where the airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep, causing pauses in breathing and disrupted sleep patterns.
In the UK, it is estimated that around 1.5 million people are affected by obstructive sleep apnoea, with research suggesting that up to 85% of cases may remain undiagnosed.³
Common symptoms of sleep apnoea may include:
Loud or persistent snoring
Gasping or choking sounds during sleep
Excessive daytime tiredness
Morning headaches
Difficulty concentrating
If symptoms suggest possible sleep apnoea, further medical assessment may be recommended before treatment.
How the Sleepwell® anti-snoring device works
The Sleepwell® anti-snoring device is a custom-made mandibular advancement device (MAD) designed to be worn while you sleep.
It works by gently positioning the lower jaw slightly forward, which helps to keep the airway open and reduces the vibration of soft tissues that causes snoring.
Because the appliance is individually made to fit your teeth, it is typically:
More comfortable than over-the-counter snoring devices
Secure and stable during sleep
Adjustable and designed for long-term use
Mandibular advancement devices such as Sleepwell® are widely used in dental sleep medicine to help manage snoring and mild to moderate sleep apnoea in suitable patients.
